Mustang M-O
Page history last edited by David Wihl 3 mos ago
Cessna had a regular M&O session for the Mustang at NBAA 2009 on Wed Oct 21, 2009. Here are some notes from that session:
Fleet size:
- 246 planes
- High time plane has 1005 hrs (s/n 7 N910SY)
- Total fleet time is 55008
- Average daily usage is 0.58 which is down from last year, given the economy. At least 3Q09 trended back upwards
Aileron Freeze Update:
- SB510-27-01 issued in July 09
- 39 planes have been updated out of 206 required (s/n 1-206)
- [Ed: why more owners haven't done this yet is unfathomable. It's covered under warranty. There have been two confirmed aileron freezes in flight - fix it!]
Cabin Door Hinge:
- SL510-52-01 cabin fasteners
- still some problems so this will need to be redone
- There is also a cabin door fairing fastener ASL510-52-02
Fuse Limiters
- Affects s/n 1-180
- Wrong fuse limiter installed (too low, not too high)
- SL510-24-06
Main landing gear support bracket
Starter / Generator Inspection
- Affects s/n 1-189
- Remove and replace if suspect
- Interestingly, another OEM wanted an AD for this, but Cessna thought only a SL would be necessary
- SL coming 4Q09. Action required within 100 hr / 6 mo
- CJ apparently has the same problem.
Cold cabin / cockpit
- Inconsistent results, lot of variation by plane
- Might be sealing problem in pylon pre-cooler
- Might be pylon pre-cooler door actuator
- Extensive design change is likely coming
Switch Connector Seating
- There are four of these switches in the cockpit: 2 start switches, starter disengage, cabin dump
- During acceptance, all four switches should be tested, including start disengage
- Affects s/n 156-227
- Require 2 clicks to fully seat connector
- SL coming 4Q09
- [Ed: Starter disengage is especially concerning, since it is used so rarely but when you need it, you really need it. So ensure that it is tested occasionally. It would be wise to know where the starter breaker is as well. Flight Safety should have covered this scenario during training.]
Tailcone Drain Hole Inspection
- Water may not drain from tailcone. Everything is installed at the factory except the hole is not drilled in the tailcone.
- Affects S/n 1-218
- Mandatory SL coming
- Only one found in the field so far
- Could cause elevator trim freeze in addition to weight and balance issues with as much as 3-4 inches of water in the tail.
Sealed Lead Acid Battery Cap Check
- Batteries are degrading prematurely
- Thus, more frequent inspections are required
- Might be impacted by planes not flying enough [Ed: or not using a battery conditioner, or battery quick disconnect]
- Required now every 200 hrs or 3 months
Fuel Oil Heat Exchanger (information provided by P&WC, not Cessna)
- Fuel filter bypass goes into bypass without any annunciation or notice
- Caused by premature poppet wear (that lets fuel leak around into bypass)
- If plane has more than 200 hr, must inspect / comply within 25 hrs
- Category 3 Alert SB A63069 issued October 2009
- Covered under warranty. [Ed: so a new poppet is swapped in, however it too may wear early.]
- Not found in field yet
- If both poppets are bad, replace the fuel control unit
- UPDATE: As of December 9, 2009, P&WC has made a design change to completely resolve this issue. See PWC 615F Fuel Oil Heat Exchanger (FOHE) Issue
Good news - new version of G1000 Software coming early 2010
- MFD will display numerical values currently only available in reversionary mode, such as oil temp. Will also display which FADEC channel is in use
- Garmin will allow a single database update for all Garmin databases: Safe Taxi, Obstacle, Terrain and Nav. Updating the PFD will update the MFD and other PFD.
- Airport directory, using the AOPA Database, will appear on WPT page
- Import / export of flight plans on SD card
- Data logging to MFD SD card, like the Cirrus Perspective
- Update will be in the form of a SB, hopefully mandatory so the fleet is consistent
- User defined hold coming, eventually - not in this release
- FYI: over 7,000 G1000s are now flying

In the G1000 Software section I deleted "Jepp ChartView still requires updating all three separately" because (even before the update) ChartView requires updating only the Garmin (lower slot) card in the MFD.

P.S. I wonder if it is Nav rather than ChartView that will still require updating all three separately, because Navdata is a Jepp (not Garmin) source DB.

Garmin is claiming that the update of Nav on a single PFD will distribute the update to the MFD and the other PFD so it need be applied only once. We'll see.
