Here are some of the questions that you can expect on your Cessna Citation Mustang Type Rating Oral or Written Test. These questions were either asked during class, in preparation for the test, or some actual test questions. The accuracy of the answers has not been completely verified so double check! Corrections and additional questions are very welcome.

General Questions:

Question Response
Define Vapp  Vapp is the Single Engine approach speed, but more importantly the climb speed in case of a single engine missed approach.
What factors affect maximum takeoff weight?
  1. Anti-ice
  2. Landing weight
  3. Max certified take off weight
  4. Flap setting
  5. Wind
  6. Temperature
  7. Elevation / pressure altitude
  8. Obstacle procedure and climb gradient
  9. Runway length, accelerate/go distance
  10. Anti-skid inop
When using CESNAV CPCalc to calculate takeoff performance, is the standard IFR climb gradient assumed? No. You must manually enter the climb gradient of 200'/ NM to generate accurate climb performance expectations.
Certain anti-ice systems must be turned on in visible moisture. Define visible moisture. Visibility of 1 SM or less.

Mustang Limitations

Question
Response
Maximum number of passengers 5
Max tailwind takeoff and landing 10 kts
Max crosswind? Is it limiting? 25 kts, no it is demonstrated
Define Vmcg, Vmca (flaps 15), Vmca (flaps 0) 73, 81, and 92 kts respectively
Vx, Vy Vx = 110, Vy = 150
Max takeoff weight 8645 lbs
Max landing weight 8000 lbs
Fuel capacity in gallons 385 US gal.
If you took off at max gross, how long would you have to fly to reach max landing weight? Fuel burn is 800 lbs first hour, so you'd have fly at most 45 min to burn off enough. Staying fast down low will burn it off faster.
Minimum speed in RVSM? Minimum weight in RVSM? Why do these limits exist? 110 kts, 6300 lbs. These limits exist because of pitot error at these pitch angles.

Mustang Engines

Question
Answer
What type of engine does the Mustang have? Pratt & Whitney Canada PW615F
Engine thrust 1460 lbs at Sea Level
Difference between max and min oil

0.4 quarts

Max oil consumption 1 quart in 13.5 hours
What type of fuel pumps are on the Mustang? Per engine: an engine driven high pressure pump pump, an electric low pressure pump, a primary ejector pump and scavenge pump.
What happens if the high pressure pump fails? The engine will flameout. The electric boost pump does not supply enough pressure.
Does the Mustang have any protection against rotor burst? No it does not, but there is redundancy in the control cables going to the tail. There are independent control cables for the rudder running along the top and bottom. The elevator cable runs along the top and the elevator trim runs along the bottom.
If you press the Engine Fire Switch, what items are changed? The firewall shutoff is enabled, the generator is turned off and the fire bottle squib is armed.
Is the Engine Fire Switch reversable in flight? Yes, if pressed again, all actions will be undone.

Avionics

Question Answer
What temperature indications does the Mustang have? RAT - Ram air temperature and ISA differential. To display OAT, an ISA to OAT conversion chart is required.
AFM page 2-20 says that you can't operate in hot weather with the air conditioner inop. Why? The G1000 has a limit of 30 minutes of operation at high temperature with the air conditioning inop.
If you are single pilot, can you dispatch with the co-pilot PFD in reversionary mode? What about the MFD? Both PFDs and the MFD have to be operational in order to dispatch, even single pilot. [Ed: the Phenom 100 may allow dispatch with a single PFD]
Where is the GFC 700 autopilot? There is no autopilot per se - it's functionality is duplicated by both GIAs.
Can the Mustang be used to fly an RNP procedure? No - currently RNP requires dual FMS and inertial navigation for the missed if GPS is lost.
Where are the magnetometers in the Mustang? In the tail / empannage.
In flight before moving from BATT to EMER, you must disconnect the
autopilot. Why, given it will be shutoff anyway?
Because the autopilot disconnect tone will continue to sound.
You fly your Mustang with an instructor in VMC. He challenges that you've forgotten your basic pilot skills like compass turns.
Before you show off, what device must be shut off?
Windshield anti-ice due to compass error.

Flight Controls and Systems

Question Answer
When must speed brakes be retracted for landing? 50 ft AGL
Under what conditions must speedbrakes be extended for landing? During a steep approach (e.g. London City)
If on EMER power, can be gear be extended? In a word, no. The remaining hydraulic pressure might be enough to extend the gear but then there wouldn't be enough for braking. The only safe way is to blow down the gear and use emergency braking.
What is the minimum speed to blow down the gear? Why? 150 kts, because ram air pressure assists in lowering the gear.
When sitting on the ground in a no wind condition, engines running, will air be flowing through the pylon? Yes, there is a little tab at the engine / pylon exhaust which will create a venturi and pull air through the pylon.
