Shopping List for a New Mustang Owner

Credit to John Hayes of CJP for the initial list.

When Taking Delivery

  • Charts for the first flight, either paper or EFB
  • RVSM Letter of Authorization from your FSDO so the plane can be flown above FL290.
  • Color coded circuit breaker covers
  • Fuel card, such as Cessna / AVfuel. Cessna supplies a full tank of fuel, but that may not be adequate to make it to the coasts.
  • Any of the below items you wish to schlep to delivery. At least in Wichita, there's a very good Walmart and other shopping nearby. Between Yingling and Walmart, everything is available close to ICT.

For the Front Baggage Compartment

The following are typically stored in the nose baggage compartment as it is more easily accessible. Also the Mustang requires that the nose baggage be opened regularly to avoid the CHECK DOORS CAS message (It must be opened for every preflight in any case).

  • Small, magnetic can opener to open oil can
  • Small funnel to pour oil
  • Shop or paper towels to clean spills including oil
  • Plastic bin(s) to carry all the above
  • Light weight set of wheel chocks
  • Small toolkit
    • At least one small wrench to replace static wicks
    • Tire gauge - make sure it is sufficient quality to be used up to 130 PSI or more. Most cheap car tire gauges do not work. A good cyclist tire gauge will (as bike tires can be up to 120 psi, similar to the nosewheel)
  • Grounding plug and cable to fit under wing. Linemen rarely use the correct grounding location.
  • Rubber fueling mat to protect the wing.
  • PW&C FADEC download cable so issues can be diagnosed before sending a technician.
  • "Do not tow" banner for when the rudder gust lock is engaged. (See Enhanced Shutdown Checklist). Aircraft Spruce and many others have them.
  • If icing is anticipated, ICEX II.
  • Provided by Cessna
    • Extra can(s) of oil
    • pitot static covers
    • spare static wick(s)
    • static wick covers (at least three for each wingtip plus tailcone)
    • engine covers, but there are better third party alternatives, like Bruce's Custom Covers

For the Cockpit

  • Leatherman multitool, like the Wave or Juice
  • Handheld VHF Comm radio, such as the ICOM IC-A14 to get ATIS, clearances
  • Top quality, no compromise screen cleaner and brush for the precious G1000 screens
  • Two small flashlights for pilot's cockpit use.  Should have a dim/ red setting. Some prefer a head mounted flashlight.
  • 2 D cell flashlight, as per 14 CFR 91F. Useful for preflight even during the day, especially to check the oil filter bypass.
  • Plastic bags for trash
  • Purell or some other small hand sanitizer
  • Lots of extra pens- ballpoint without a cap (click-type).
  • Small notebook to note flight times, squawks.  Hobbs meter only operates inflight, so pilot must note time of taxi start/ final parking for pilot logging purposes.
  • Lip balm as it gets pretty dry especially if you use oxygen. Beware of lipstick catching fire.
  • Wireless thermometer. Use one display for the cockpit temperature. Place the remote sensor on the small shelf behind the rearmost cabin seats to display the cabin temperature. Both the display and the remote sensor can be held in place using velcro.
  • Bring your own headset if the Cessna provided Telexes are found inadequate.  Many pilots find the audio quality and noise attenutating properties of the Telexes inadequate for long flights.
  • EFB to calculate performance
  • Satphone to call ahead for pizza delivery at the FBO during a quickturn.

For the Cabin

  • Plastic bags for trash, preferablly with a handle to slip over pilot's armrest.  Plastic grocery bags are perfect.
  • Purell or some other small hand sanitizer
  • Keep the snack and drink drawers stocked
  • One or two small fleece blankets. Some Mustangs have problems regulating temperature in cabin and it can get cold. The blanket is also useful to cover the wings when you need a handy surface for a binder or something else lightweight.
  • Spare batteries (flashlights, XM remote)
  • Life jackets for any over water usage (also required as per 91 Subpart F). If going more than 100 nm or 30 minutes over water, a raft is required too.  See Extended Over Water Operations
  • First aid kit. The big metal "Aviation First Kit" sold by many pilot supply shops does not fit in any of the Mustang cubbies. A smaller one from a pharmacy is likely adequate.
  • Restop 1 (#1) or 2 (#2) emergency lav bags. Strongly suggest not to use the big black plastic bag furnished by Cessna. Store the Restop boxes inside the lav bucket so it is clear that this is not to be used.
  • Hand wipes
  • Power inverter, or DC-DC power converter. The Mustang has two airplane style 12V outlets. Cessna supplies one airplane - car cable adaptor. Excellent, commercial grade inverters and converters are made by Lind. Lenovo has a super slim DC-DC converter to for their own laptops plus pluggable tips for almost everything else including cell phones. Limited to 100W per outlet.
  • Cessna supplied:
    • Passenger briefing card
    • XM Remote control
    • Audio headsets

For the Hangar

  • Battery Maintainer
  • A tug if you are not using an FBO
  • Cessna supplied:
    • Cleaning supplies
    • Spare static wick covers
